Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo set to negotiate plea bargain

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sandro Tonali is willing to work out a plea agreement with the FIGC and the prosecutor in Turin, but he still faces a minimum 18-month suspension.

Last week, after being questioned by police at Italy’s training center Coverciano together with fellow countryman Nicolò Zaniolo, the midfielder for Newcastle and Italy was placed under formal investigation.

Il Corriere della Sera reports that Tonali sought assistance from a therapist to address her gambling addiction while in tears.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tonali is prepared to “cooperate” with the FIGC and the Prosecutors in Turin, disclosing all of his knowledge of the betting scandal and the events on which he placed bets.

Nicolò Fagioli, a Juventus midfielder, used the same tactic, which is how the investigation began.

Gazzetta claims that Tonali and Fagioli violated Article 24 of the Code of Sporting Justice by placing bets on football games. If found guilty, their sentence would be reduced by half through a plea agreement, but a minimum three-year ban would still apply.

According to the article, Fagioli will face one final hearing this week before FIGC Prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné rules. Following that, the Juventus midfield player is expected to face a suspension ranging from 10 to 18 months.

Given that the 22-year-old voluntarily cooperated with police and supplied crucial information for the investigation, Fagioli’s punishment will be light.

Tonali and the other players may face harsher penalties because FIGC wants to send a “strong signal” to football players and the public, according to Gazzetta.

Furthermore, it is purportedly still unknown if Tonali wagered on Milan matches when he was a Rossoneri player. The Newcastle midfielder’s and Zaniolo’s smartphones and tablets are still being examined by investigators.

It will take a few months to finish the inquiry and find out how long Tonali will be suspended, but if his self-report and the information found in his gadgets match, the Azzurri midfielder will probably receive a term of about eighteen months.
