Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to withdraw their interest in Aston Villa target Nico Williams

According to Record through Sport Witness, Nico Williams may choose to stay at Athletic Club, which might mean the end of the race for Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Spanish giants and several other Premier League clubs were interested in the 21-year-old winger, but his future appears to be secure in Basque.

Nico Williams has become as one of the most sought-after names in Spain following his appearances for Athletic Club and the Spanish national team. He is a certain starter in any team, and his contract situation with the Basque club has sparked much conjecture.

Unai Emery attempted to sign him during the summer, despite the fact that he only had a year left on his contract. Athletic Club, on the other hand, has no intention of selling their prized asset on the cheap and is certain of renewing his contract.

Despite the Catalans emerging as favourites for the 21-year-old, reports said Williams would have preferred Real Madrid over Barcelona. Williams may have joined some of his younger Spanish colleagues at Camp Nou, like Gavi, Pedri, and Lacine Yamal.

According to the report, Premier League clubs like as Villa and Brighton are also intrigued and may try to sign him in January. The 21-year-old winger has yet to sign a new deal, while rumours suggest he is leaning toward a renewal.

Athletic Club understands the risks of allowing the situation to deteriorate as the January window approaches without a renewal. They are aware of competition interest, particularly from foreign teams willing to engage into a pre-contract arrangement with the 21-year-old winger.

However, with Athletic Club confident about extending his stay for the long term future, Real Madrid and Barcelona are ready to bow out of the race. Even Aston Villa might concede defeat in the hunt, but things could still change.

Many of these top clubs would have seen Williams as an important part of their system, but now they may have to look away.
