UPDATE: A Bears insider has hinted that a former starter might be in jeopardy of losing their roster spot.

The Chicago Bears made a significant move in NFL free agency by signing veteran D’Andre Swift as their starting running back for the 2024 season, raising questions about the future of former starter Khalil Herbert as his contract expires heading into training camp.

According to The Athletic’s Adam Jahns, Herbert could be considered “on the bubble” given the Bears’ recent backfield additions. While Jahns projected Herbert to initially make the Bears’ 53-man roster in their latest roster projections, he acknowledged the possibility of Herbert being released due to the team’s roster construction.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay also speculated on Herbert’s uncertain roster status, suggesting he could be one of the notable cut candidates across the NFL during training camp. Kay highlighted Herbert’s solid career performance, averaging 4.9 yards per carry over 42 games, which could attract interest from other teams if he becomes available.

Herbert has amassed 1,775 rushing yards and eight touchdowns during his tenure with the Bears, serving as their primary back in 2023 despite missing several games due to injury. However, with Swift and Roschon Johnson locked in for the foreseeable future, and Johnson showing promise in his rookie year, the Bears may opt to part ways with Herbert rather than slotting him into a lesser role.

Considering Herbert’s experience and potential, he could potentially be traded rather than outright released. Teams like the Dallas Cowboys, who are seeking depth in their backfield after losing Tony Pollard, or the Las Vegas Raiders, who are monitoring their running back situation closely, might view Herbert as a valuable addition through a mid-to-late-round draft pick exchange.

As the Bears evaluate their options heading into the 2024 season, Herbert’s fate will likely hinge on how he performs in training camp and whether there’s a fit for him elsewhere in the league.
