Tuesday is probably when Cards catcher Willson Contreras starts a minor league rehab assignment.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras is set to start a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday after being sidelined since May 7 due to a broken left forearm. Contreras, who underwent surgery the day after the injury, has been participating in batting practice sessions in St. Louis. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol mentioned that the exact location for Contreras’ rehab stint has not been determined yet.

Contreras, a three-time All-Star, has been having a strong season, batting .280 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in 31 games. His return is highly anticipated as he has been a key offensive contributor for the Cardinals.

In other team news, right-hander Kyle Gibson was placed on the bereavement list before the series finale against the Chicago Cubs. Ryan Loutos was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Gibson’s place. Gibson delivered an impressive performance on Friday, pitching seven innings in a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. Marmol expects Gibson to return in time for his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins.
