Norwich City’s influential attacking midfielder has drawn interest from AS Roma following a season where he contributed to 25 goals in 48 matches.
Brazilian-based sports journalist Andre Hernan reported late on Tuesday night that Norwich City has communicated their position to interested parties.
Hernan tweeted to his 333,000 followers: “Roma in Italy has joined the race for Gabriel Sara, formerly of Sao Paulo. Norwich in England is not entertaining talks for less than 20 million Euros. Keeping the player in this transfer window will be very challenging.”
Sara, along with England Under-21 international Jon Rowe and US forward Josh Sargent, are seen as Norwich City’s most valuable assets this summer.
Additionally, Adam Idah and Marcelino Nunez have garnered strong interest from clubs in Scotland and Turkey, respectively.
Multiple Italian media outlets have recently reported that newly-appointed Roma sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, along with manager Daniele De Rossi, have targeted Gabriel Sara.
Roma finished sixth in Serie A last season, two points ahead of city rivals Lazio but far behind champions Inter by 31 points. De Rossi, who extended his contract with Roma until 2027, replaced Jose Mourinho last season and led Roma to a top-six league finish and the Europa League semi-finals.
Norwich City’s 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder is under contract at Carrow Road until 2026, with a club option for an additional year, following his move from Sao Paulo in 2022 for an initial fee of £6 million plus add-ons. His former club reportedly holds a 10% sell-on clause from any future Norwich transfer.
Sporting director Ben Knapper emphasized during the unveiling of new head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup that player sales were likely this summer. “There’s always pressure on us here because that’s our model,” he stated. “We want to build a team that can win games and achieve promotion, but we also aim for sustainability.”
Gabriel Sara is expected to join the rest of Norwich City’s non-international players at Colney later this week for pre-season testing ahead of the new Championship season, which kicks off on the weekend of August 10th.
