Steve Lutz, the coach of Oklahoma State, said of playing Bedlam, “It’s going to happen.”

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State will have a chance to get revenge on their in-state rivals before the end of 2024.

Cowboys’ head coach Steve Lutz announced Wednesday that the Bedlam rivalry game against Oklahoma is expected to be played in mid-December. This follows weeks of speculation that the rivalry would continue as a non-conference game, with the Sooners set to join the SEC next month.

“I don’t remember the exact date,” Lutz said. “It’s going to happen from everything I’ve been told. It’s going to be at Paycom Center. Porter and I talked about it last week. I just haven’t seen a contract. I don’t anticipate any snags with it. Until you have a contract signed, I don’t think anything is definite.”

Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser, entering his fourth season with the Sooners in 2024-25, expressed confidence in February that the rivalry would persist.

“I personally don’t think this is the last time we play,” Moser said. “I see a world where this great rivalry continues. Don’t know when that is based on a lot of logistical factors but I see a world where this great rivalry continues.”

While football may see changes, almost every other team sport is expected to maintain the rivalry next year, albeit less frequently due to the teams no longer being conference opponents.

Coaches of both baseball and softball programs have expressed their desire to continue playing each other. Oklahoma State soccer will host the Sooners in Stillwater on Aug. 22 this season.

In basketball, Oklahoma swept last year’s meetings, winning 66-62 in Norman and 84-82 in overtime in Stillwater on a buzzer-beater.

Despite being on the job for only two and a half months, Lutz recognizes the rivalry’s significance.

“Let’s be honest: Cowboys don’t like Sooners,” Lutz said, smiling. “We’ve had a lot of success in the Bedlam series. I don’t know the exact numbers.”

In the past five years, Oklahoma State is 9-7 against the Sooners, including 4-2 against Moser-led Oklahoma teams. The Cowboys are also 9-7 against Oklahoma on neutral courts.

Why was it important for Lutz to keep playing their southern rivals?

“More importantly, it’s great for our state,” Lutz said. “Everybody wants to be able to say, ‘This is the year we beat the Sooners in basketball, football, and down the line.’ It’s bragging rights and all that comes with it.”

Other games reportedly on Oklahoma State’s 2024-25 schedule include the season opener at home against Green Bay on Nov. 4, a trip to Seton Hall on Dec. 8 as part of the Big East-Big 12 Battle, and participating in the 2024 Charleston Classic during the week of Thanksgiving.
