Ollie Watkins discusses his reasons for seeing a therapist both before and after Aston Villa games.

Ollie Watkins has disclosed that he utilizes the services of a life coach both before and after Aston Villa matches to unload any concerns he may have. The forward credits consistent therapy as a significant factor in his exceptional performance over the past 20 months. Last season, he scored 19 top-flight goals, matching a Premier League record for any Villa player, contributing to the club’s advancement to the Champions League.

In an interview with the High Performance Podcast, Watkins stated, “Before every game, I ensure that I’ve addressed any lingering issues by speaking with a life coach. Since collaborating with him, I’ve noticed a definite improvement. If there’s anything weighing on my mind, I address it before heading into the game so that I can solely focus on the task at hand.”

He further added, “My aim is to deliver my optimal performance and bring out the best version of myself on match day. I consider it the most worthwhile investment I’ve made—dedicating resources to my personal growth and mindset has undoubtedly enhanced my abilities as a player.”

“Regardless of whether I’ve scored or not, whether it’s three goals or none, I still make a point to speak with him. Before and after games, I ensure I debrief on everything so I can mentally prepare for the next match. Since he’s been involved, it’s made a significant difference.”

Watkins elaborated, “Sometimes I just need to reach out for a chat, to touch base, or seek his perspective on things. I never feel like I should only contact him when I need something. He’s straightforward. I remember scoring a hat-trick against Brighton, and he congratulated me, but quickly reminded me that it doesn’t define anything.”

“He’s right. Scoring goals doesn’t change the fact that I still have to perform in the next game. It’s about moving forward. Similarly, after a poor performance, he reminds me that it’s in the past and that I have the opportunity to make it right in the next game.”

“I believe the mind is incredibly powerful. While people focus on physical training every day, it’s the mental aspect that requires significant effort to change.”

“Belief was perhaps a factor that held me back initially. You need to possess a certain level of confidence, that self-assurance that nothing can deter you.

“I’d argue that mindset is paramount. Your mind has immense influence. You can manipulate your thoughts to believe various things. Initially, it affected my performance, but ultimately, it’s contributed to my current position. I used to place a lot of pressure on myself, but not as much as before.”
