NFL insider responds to allegations about Justin Fields and Russell Wilson of the Steelers

Veteran NFL insider Jason La Canfora continues to assert that the Pittsburgh Steelers will have quarterback Justin Fields vie for the starting position alongside seasoned player Russell Wilson this summer.

During the latest episode of the “In The Huddle” podcast, as reported by Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot, La Canfora discussed the Steelers’ quarterback situation, noting a prevailing sentiment favoring Wilson. However, he emphasized his belief that the team has been eyeing Fields for an extended period. La Canfora suggested that while the initial setup might feature both quarterbacks, the team’s emphasis on time of possession might lead to a significant role for Fields.

Earlier in March, La Canfora had expressed confidence in Fields, speculating that he would need a poor preseason to not secure a starting role due to significant support within the Steelers organization. However, recent reports indicate Wilson’s emergence as the frontrunner during Organized Team Activities, with Dan Graziano of ESPN noting Wilson’s influence within the team due to his contract’s no-trade clause.

Additionally, the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, is expected to implement a run-heavy strategy, potentially benefiting Fields’ dual-threat capabilities. La Canfora suggests that Fields could bring a dynamic aspect to the offense, particularly with the team’s defensive strengths.

La Canfora also observed Wilson’s adaptation to a more conservative playing style, contrasting it with Fields’ potential for explosive plays. Despite both quarterbacks averaging similar yards per pass attempt last season, La Canfora sees Fields as offering more versatility.

Despite these considerations, Wilson remains a contender for the Comeback Player of the Year Award, according to DraftKings Sportsbook’s odds.
