Mavericks supporters have hope that the team can still win the Finals thanks to Kyrie Irving’s laser-like focus.

History is not on the Dallas Mavericks’ side in the 2024 NBA Finals. Recovering from a 3-0 deficit has never been achieved in NBA history, making their situation seem nearly impossible. However, while a comeback would require a miraculous effort, it isn’t entirely out of reach, especially considering the challenges posed by the Boston Celtics’ star-studded lineup.

The Mavericks were anticipated to have an edge over their opponents due to their formidable offensive duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Despite their talents, both players have struggled throughout the series. Additionally, Dallas’s need for another reliable scorer has become evident, as five Celtics players have outscored the Mavericks’ third-leading scorer, P.J. Washington. This scoring disparity has made it difficult for the Mavericks to keep up with Boston.

Kyrie Irving’s determined mindset offers a glimmer of hope for Mavericks fans. Despite the daunting odds, not all hope is lost. Doncic has maintained a positive outlook, asserting that “it’s not over until it’s over.” Irving, when asked about the possibility of him and Doncic being the greatest scoring backcourt of all time and their strategy for the Finals, emphasized his focus on team success over individual accolades. He acknowledged the compliments but stressed the importance of preparing to face a formidable opponent like the Celtics.

While the road ahead is challenging, the Mavericks’ star players are determined to fight back and defy the odds.

Interestingly, Irving also mentioned that despite the initial excitement surrounding his partnership with Luka Doncic, achieving success at the highest level would take time. This suggests that there may be another level of performance that he and Doncic can reach. Whether this happens during the current playoffs or in future seasons remains to be seen.

Irving, a former champion, has already demonstrated his capability to elevate his game, nearly leading Dallas to a 21-point comeback in the fourth quarter of Game 3. After two subpar performances, Irving bounced back with a 35-point effort on Wednesday, the highest-scoring performance from any player in this round. Unfortunately, his impressive game was not enough to secure a win for the Mavericks.

As the series progresses, it may be premature for the Mavericks to start planning for next season, but there are valuable lessons to be learned from their losses to Boston. Key insights include finding ways to optimize the Doncic-Irving partnership, especially against teams with multiple shot-creators and versatile defenders.

Despite the challenging odds, Dallas fans should not lose hope in the 2024 Finals. History has shown that it’s unwise to count out the Mavericks’ stars. With Irving and Doncic’s potential to reach new heights, there remains a possibility for a remarkable turnaround.
