The Mavericks are the front-runners to sign a top free agent.

Klay Thompson is preparing to explore free agency this offseason, marking the end of an 11-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors.

Amidst stalled contract negotiations between Thompson and the Warriors, Marc Stein has reported that the Dallas Mavericks are likely to emerge as the frontrunner to secure the services of the veteran shooting guard. Stein noted earlier that the Mavericks are actively investigating the possibility of signing Thompson, underscoring their serious intent.

Recent reports from Anthony Slater indicate that the Warriors have not presented Thompson with a contract offer, and talks between the two parties have not yielded any progress. Stein reaffirmed that both sides remain far apart in their discussions.

Thompson, who posted his lowest points per game average since 2013 last season at 17.9, was also moved to the Warriors’ bench at times during the campaign. Golden State aims to bolster its roster around Stephen Curry with top-tier talent, highlighting their desire to contend for another NBA championship.

The Mavericks have positioned themselves favorably with recent roster moves, including trading Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons for Quentin Grimes, thereby enhancing their salary cap flexibility. This maneuver potentially enables them to utilize the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception and pursue significant acquisitions in free agency, possibly including Thompson.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks, who finished just three wins shy of an NBA title last season, identified a need for a reliable third scoring option alongside Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. Thompson’s championship pedigree and his proficiency as a catch-and-shoot scorer make him an appealing fit for Dallas, offering the potential to elevate their competitiveness and championship aspirations.
