Five things Johannes Hoff Thorup can do to improve Norwich City

With Norwich City needing to be economical this summer, Samuel Seaman examines five adjustments Johannes Hoff Thorup can implement without relying on new transfers.

Returning Gibbs to his natural position

One of the most predictable outcomes from our annual survey of Canaries supporters was their top transfer priority for this summer. Nearly 30% of respondents indicated that securing a defensive midfielder should be the main focus, with only the center-back position being more popular.

Since then, City has announced the signing of Panamanian center-back Jose Cordoba, shifting the focus to who will anchor the midfield under Thorup.

One solution is to search the market for a gem like Oliver Skipp in 2020 or the brilliant acquisition of Alexander Tettey in 2013. However, finding a good holding player at a bargain price is challenging, so sporting director Ben Knapper might need to rely on his new head coach and the current squad.

Returning Gibbs to his natural position

Among the current players is Liam Gibbs, who showed promise at the heart of midfield before being moved forward. With his stamina, passing ability, and skillset, Gibbs could save the club valuable money this summer.

Making Sorensen a defensive specialist

Jacob Sorensen’s versatility has been a mixed blessing. Though he arrived as a midfielder, he’s played multiple positions, including defense, where his calm defending and reliable distribution shine. With doubts about Shane Duffy and Grant Hanley in a possession-heavy system, specializing Sorensen could uncover a defensive gem within the team.

Taking a chance on Montoia

From a logistical perspective, left-back needs urgent attention. While they might need two signings for first-choice and cover, they could also consider Guilherme Montoia from the under-21s. Montoia, who captained the development side and made the first-team bench last season, has the attacking flair that might suit Thorup’s philosophy. Promoting Montoia could reduce the pressure on Knapper this summer.

Keeping Aboh around

It’s widely expected that Ken Aboh will renew his contract. The 19-year-old, whose talent generated excitement, could be a valuable backup. Instead of loaning him out, City might benefit from keeping Aboh as a reliable alternative, especially with uncertainties in the striker position.

Trying Fassnacht out centrally

Christian Fassnacht, brought in by David Wagner, has demonstrated technical ability and scored six goals. Many fans believe he could be more effective in a central ‘number 10’ role. With potential departures like Gabriel Sara and interest in Marcelino Nunez, internal reinforcements might be necessary. Fassnacht could be the answer to filling these creative gaps.
