Almost immediately after Toronto Blue Jays prospect Orelvis Martinez began to identify himself as a major leaguer, the Dominican player found himself sidelined.
Promoted to the active roster a little over a week ago due to Bo Bichette’s injury, Martinez played in just one game for Toronto. He manned second base and went 1-for-3 in his debut, securing a single off veteran Guardians pitcher Carlos Carrasco.
However, fast forward to this past Sunday, and Martinez was placed on the suspension list. Major League Baseball announced an 80-game suspension for his use of performance-enhancing drugs, though Martinez later claimed the substance was part of fertility treatments he had received during the offseason.
If Martinez’s explanation holds true, it represents a significant misstep for a professional baseball player, given the stringent drug testing protocols and ample resources available to athletes to prevent such situations. Ultimately, Martinez faces the consequences, with the Blue Jays’ top infield prospect unable to return until late September.
