The defensive line room is focused on establishing the bar for the roster.

In the early stages of the season, the Raiders’ defensive line appears to have further strengthened this offseason. Already formidable in the trenches during the 2023 season, with Maxx Crosby earning recognition as an NFL Defensive Player of the Year finalist, Malcolm Koonce demonstrating impressive performance with eight sacks in the last nine games, and the defense consistently holding opponents to under 17 points per game from Week 9 onward, the addition of Christian Wilkins only enhances their prowess.

Wilkins, previously with the Miami Dolphins, brings additional depth to the team. Coach Rob Leonard, who has worked with Wilkins before, alongside Adam Butler and John Jenkins, emphasizes the importance of attention to detail in their approach. With a clear directive on how to execute various plays and strategies, Leonard aims to set a standard for the team’s performance.

Reflecting on his experience, Leonard expresses excitement about the current group’s potential, noting the continuity from the previous season with the inclusion of Wilkins. Despite any skepticism from outsiders, he is confident in the unit’s capabilities and enjoys working with them.

Crosby, much like Leonard, vividly recalls the external skepticism surrounding the defensive line last season. What was initially a question mark for the team has since transformed into one of its most formidable assets.

Despite heightened expectations for the group, the internal standard has remained consistent.

“We’ve experienced being touted as preseason Super Bowl contenders and also facing predictions of losing every game,” Crosby remarked following the first minicamp practice on Tuesday. “But all that external chatter doesn’t hold weight. Our focus remains on the work and the process… That’s why I prioritize staying present; I’ve been in those situations numerous times, and we have teammates who share that perspective.”

As Leonard enters his second season with the Raiders, his impact on the locker room hasn’t gone unnoticed. Several players, Crosby included, have praised Leonard’s ability to forge strong connections with the defensive line.

“He challenges us daily,” Crosby affirmed. “His coaching style varies for each individual, but he doesn’t shy away from coaching. In today’s game, some players might feel they’re beyond coaching, insisting on their own way or nothing. But Rob can relate to us.

“Having played Division I football and being surrounded by top-tier talent, he commands respect in our room… It’s a special dynamic, and it all stems from him. I believe he’s done an outstanding job, consistently pushing us to excel in every aspect.”
