Considering Cowser’s strength, June coming to an end, and Urías’ strong defense

The Texas Rangers were attempting a comeback from a two-run deficit, taking advantage of the Orioles’ erratic bullpen. They narrowed Baltimore’s lead from 2-0 to 2-1 in the seventh inning, setting up a crucial moment with Marcus Semien at bat and the bases loaded, two outs.

Facing Orioles’ pitcher Jacob Webb with a 2-2 count, Semien hit a sharply hit ball towards third base. Ramón Urías, the 2022 American League Gold Glove winner at third, made an impressive backhanded play and threw out Semien. Despite the ball coming off Semien’s bat at 96.5 mph with a Statcast expected batting average of .530, the Rangers were denied a scoring opportunity.

In the Orioles’ 2-1 victory, Urías’s defensive play stood out as pivotal. Reflecting on the play in the postgame, Urías emphasized staying calm and understanding the situation and the runner. His experience and composure on such critical plays, amid the intensity of the stadium atmosphere, proved crucial once again.

Urías, who has been with the Orioles since 2020 and played his 375th game with the team that night, expressed joy in being a key member of the club. He praised the team’s talent and camaraderie in the clubhouse, highlighting his enjoyment and dedication every night.

Meanwhile, the Orioles improved their record to 8-11 in one-run games this season. Closer Craig Kimbrel secured his 18th save, and the 435th of his career, with a flawless ninth inning. Despite earlier struggles in one-run save opportunities, Kimbrel’s performance helped secure the Orioles’ win.

The Orioles have navigated a grueling stretch of baseball, playing 30 games in 31 days before an upcoming off-day. Manager Brandon Hyde acknowledged the challenges and praised the team’s resilience and competitiveness against formidable opponents throughout this demanding period.

Rookie Colton Cowser has showcased his power with recent home runs, including one off Max Scherzer, adding to his impactful contributions amid fluctuations in his rookie season performance. Hyde noted Cowser’s progress in making adjustments at the plate, especially in recognizing how opposing teams are pitching him.

Despite a recent five-game losing streak where the team struggled with a high ERA, the Orioles bounced back with improved pitching, allowing only five runs over their last three wins.
