What is Billing’s trajectory at Bournemouth going forward?

Less than a year ago, Philip Billing signed a new four-year contract with Bournemouth at the end of August 2023. Despite his impressive participation in 36 out of 38 Premier League games during the 2022/23 season under former head coaches Scott Parker and Gary O’Neil, where he logged 2,787 minutes, scored 7 goals, and provided 1 assist, his playing time has since drastically declined.

Under new AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, Philip Billing’s initial form persisted with 12 of his 13 Premier League starts occurring between the season’s onset and early November. However, he has only started once in the 2024 calendar year thus far.

Philip Billing’s Premier League playing time amounted to 1,393 minutes, supplemented by 16 appearances off the bench. His difficulties adapting to Andoni Iraola’s pressing tactics led to a decline in his standing within the squad, placing him behind Justin Kluivert, Alex Scott, Ryan Christie, Tyler Adams, and Lewis Cook in midfield options.

AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola mentioned to the Daily Echo:

“Philip Billing started by playing significantly more minutes than he has recently. He was coming off of very strong seasons, and I have no doubt about his quality as a player. However, it has been challenging for me, especially with players like Justin and Alex Scott who can also play in his position, and with Ryan Christie performing exceptionally well. The competition for places in midfield is very intense.

“But I am satisfied with how he has contributed to the team, even when coming off the bench in the second halves of games. Despite being accustomed to more playing time, he has not complained.”
