Bears DB Receives Leave From Team to Assist His Olympian Wife

Jonathan Owens, a defensive back for the Chicago Bears, has been given permission to take time off from training camp to support his wife, Simone Biles, who is competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Olympics overlap with the Bears’ training schedule and the NFL’s preseason Hall of Fame Game. Training camp starts on July 23, and the Olympics Opening Ceremony is on July 26. The Bears are set to play against the Houston Texans on August 1 in Canton, Ohio, coinciding with the women’s all-around final, where Biles is favored to win gold.

Owens recently signed a two-year contract with the Bears after playing three seasons with the Houston Texans and spending last year with their rival, the Green Bay Packers. The 2024 season with the Bears carries heightened expectations.

Biles, a celebrated Olympic gymnast, has the opportunity to break the record for the most Olympic medals at the upcoming Games.

In an interview with Nancy Armour of USA Today, Simone Biles confirmed that her husband, Jonathan Owens, will be attending the Olympic Games. The couple, known as one of the most prominent multi-sport couples, continues to support each other in their respective athletic endeavors.

This marks Owens’ first chance to witness Biles compete in the Olympics, as the couple started dating in 2020. Due to Covid restrictions in 2021, Owens was unable to attend the Tokyo Olympics.

Owens has been present at all of Biles’ meets this summer. However, it was uncertain until now whether he would be able to attend the Paris Olympics due to the conflicting schedule with the Bears. Biles has consistently supported her husband at numerous NFL games throughout his tenure with the Texans and the Packers.

Simone Biles currently holds seven Olympic medals, placing her tied for ninth among gymnasts in terms of all-time Olympic medal count. The record of 18 medals is held by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who competed in the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics.
