In May, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted that the Clippers are “unwilling to offer George more than the three-year, $152.3 million extension [they] gave to Kawhi Leonard.” Although the Clippers could propose a four-year, $221 million maximum contract, if they refuse to go that high and the 76ers do, George might consider teaming up with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey for a championship pursuit.
George recently commented on his podcast that his focus isn’t necessarily on “chasing a championship” but on “playing the right style of basketball.” However, he didn’t clarify what he meant by the “right style of basketball,” leaving his statement open to interpretation.
The idea of the “right style” of basketball varies by team and personnel. For instance, Kevin Durant joined the Warriors to play in their unique ball and player movement system, which was distinctive at the time. Today, differences in team playing styles are more nuanced and often revolve around high-usage stars like Luka Doncic or Trae Young. George, who has played with James Harden, may not want to be part of an offense where he waits for the ball with limited time on the shot clock.
Considering the teams vying for George, it’s hard to pinpoint which play the “wrong style” of basketball. George seems content with the Clippers’ style. The Orlando Magic would likely adapt their offense to George, but it’s hard to imagine George prioritizing a move to a rebuilding team like the Magic or the Rockets over contending with the Clippers.

He mentioned on his podcast the importance of teams being able to defend and switch across multiple positions, praising the Celtics for their defensive versatility. Therefore, a team’s defensive capabilities might also influence his decision, making a team like Orlando more appealing if they can provide a strong defensive lineup.
In today’s NBA, predicting where a top player like George will end up is challenging. Teams with cap space are the obvious contenders, but creative solutions can always be found. George’s comment about wanting to “play the right way” leaves much to speculation, underscoring the uncertainty of his future plans.
